MLK Days of Service

Traditionally across the country the MLK Holiday has been celebrated with service to honor the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. Volunteer Memphis, an action initiative of Leadership Memphis, in partnership with United Way of the Mid-South, took that idea and expanded on it to offer Memphis four full days of service this year from January 13 – 16.

The results of this first-ever event were better than we could have hoped for. Memphis really came together and offered 70 volunteer opportunities to more than 1,000 volunteers. It all started Thursday at our Kick-Off Celebration at the Benjamin L. Hooks Public Library.

Each day included a different theme for organizations to craft their opportunities around. Friday was “Youth and Education Day,” with opportunities like FAFSA completion sessions and book readings for younger youth.

We had several groups of FAFSA Completion volunteers at various locations across the whole four day weekend.

Saturday was “Friends and Family Day,” and Sunday was “Service after Service Day.” Both of these days offered posted volunteer opportunities from many organizations, but we really encouraged folks to take part in DIY opportunities. The goal was to have families, worship groups, or community groups come together to create and project and carry it out together.

Miss Shelby County, Aria Stiles, volunteered with Refugee Empowerment Programs and shared her love of violin.

Monday was “Clean-Up Monday,” with opportunities across the city to beautify public spaces, from schools and parks to small neighborhoods.

A great team of Memphis first responders out helping with Clean-Up projects across the city.

We are marking down the first MLK Days of Service as a huge success. Thank you to our many sponsors, partner organizations, and most of all, the great volunteers we have across Memphis. We’ll see you next year!
